The SSI-Cox Simple Profiler is a
highly accurate, low cost solution for testing the ride quality
of pavement surfaces. The system is a lightweight, modular
single laser system capable of reporting dual wheel paths with
SSI’s patented bi-directional data collection system. The Simple
Profiler can be configured and operational in minutes as a high
speed profiling system (installed onto highway speed vehicles)
or as a lightweight profiler (attached to an ATV or compact
utility vehicle). The data collection module quickly installs
onto industry standard 2 inch (50 mm) receivers, which SSI can
customize for the front or rear of particular vehicles. The
flexible mount distance measurement interface is also designed
for attachment to multiple vehicles. The system is operated
using the supplied operator interface housing that includes a
notebook computer, on-board printer (with power assisted paper
take-up) and AC/DC power supplies.
The Simple Profiler is offered in
separate configurations for asphalt and concrete pavements. The
asphalt system has a single point (“dot”) laser, while the
concrete system is equipped with the LMI/Selcom RoLine laser.
The RoLine sensor has a 100 point laser scan that reads a 4 inch
(100 mm) swath of pavement and eliminates the artificial
inflation of ride quality test results caused by concrete
pavement with grooves, tines, or coarse textures.
Several accessories and upgrades are available, including (1) a
wireless radio kit for wireless transmission of the profile data
between the exterior data collection module and the operator
interface computer, (2) a Panasonic Toughbook military
specification rugged notebook computer with touchscreen
controls, (3) a GPS subsystem, with the GPS position coordinates
integrated with the profile data stations.
The Simple Profiler features a digital
data collection architecture that generates surface profile data
having a equal or greater accuracy and repeatability than any
competitive device. The system can also pinpoint “hot-spot”
areas of localized roughness with unmatched precision. SSI has
the test results and research data to demonstrate the superior
accuracy and repeatability capabilities of SSI-Cox profiling
systems. The feature-rich Windows software programs offer
incomparable ease of operation and facilitate widespread use and
sharing of profile data among all parties interested in the
profile attributes of a surface throughout a project’s life
cycle. The superior attributes of the SSI-Cox Simple Profiling
system evolve from patented technology and years of PhD level
professional engineering.
The SSI-Cox Simple Profiler can
operate at speeds ranging from 5mph up to 70 mph (asphalt
systems; 55 mph for concrete systems with the Selcom RoLine
sensor). Profile data is backed up
in real time, and the collection system suspends itself when the
vehicle drops below the minimum operating speed. The system is
supplied with three data collection triggers, including SSI’s
proprietary reverse direction triggering method, which collects
data with exact stations (chainage) without pre-measuring or
marking the test surface with reflective tape or pylons.
The Simple Profiler is designed for
easy, safe one-person operation. SSI’s profiling system software
programs are the industry’s longest running Windows based
applications. The calibration, data collection and data analysis
routines are user-friendly, intelligent software programs that
provide the system operator with computer instructed guidance
while using the system. The system allows instant viewing of
profile results and localized roughness. PDF images and ERD or
Excel format exports of the profile data are available by
touching a single button within the software. Simulation
routines are provided for predicting the corrected profile of an
existing surface after corrective grinding or overlay. Encrypted
raw data can be re-analyzed repeatedly with numerous adjustable
data reduction and filtering parameters.
The
Simple Profiler is guaranteed to meet or exceed all applicable
DOT agency test methods and certification procedures. As with
the other SSI-Cox profiling systems, this includes the
industry’s most stringent certification protocols: AASHTO
PP51-02 and Texas Department of Transportation Test Tex 1001-S
(as administered by The Texas Transportation Institute).
