OVERVIEW
|
|
The SSI T3 Ultra-Light Profiling System features
digital data collection architecture for precision testing of
surface profile conditions for road, bridge, sidewalk, airport
and specialty applications. The system generates industry
standard ride quality (smoothness) test results, precise
reporting of the position and dimensions of localized roughness,
and optional grade, slope and texture measurements. The data
collection system components include a high resolution laser,
aerospace accelerometer, an optical distance encoder, and
optional GPS and tilt sensors. These components are installed
onto a zero-emissions personal mobility vehicle with a zero
degree turning radius and long life batteries that are field
swappable. The T3 system is supplied with a Panasonic
Toughbook 19
military specification computer configured with SSI’s feature
rich Windows software. The data collection and analysis
routines are simple to learn and operate. Surface data can be
viewed, printed, and exported under a variety of user specified
parameters. System operators can easily share data with all
parties interested in the profile attributes of a surface
throughout its life cycle. The superior attributes of the SSI
T3 ultra-light system evolve from patented technology and years
of PhD level professional engineering. The T3 system is
available for purchase or rental (with or without a trained
operator).
For road, bridge, and airport applications, the
SSI T3 Ultra-Light system complies with existing agency
specifications and test methods. The SSI T3 system generates
precision surface profile data, including International
Roughness Index (“IRI”), Profile Ride Index (“PRI”) and other
commonly used ride quality indexes. The system can also
precisely detect and report “hot-spot” areas of localized
roughness for corrective measures. Project level incentive and
disincentives calculations can be easily calculated with the
supplied spreadsheet templates. The SSI T3 Ultra-Light
profiling system is available with laser sensors designed for
asphalt or concrete pavements.
For sidewalks, the SSI T3 system automates
evaluation of compliance with Americans With Disabilities Act
(“ADA”) rights-of-way accessibility standards. The system can
assess several key criteria for accessibility, including:
-
Changes in Level (longitudinal smoothness)
and Localized Roughness (length of defects and amplitude of
peaks/troughs).
-
Optional Grade
(Running Slope) and Cross Slope.
-
Optional GPS (with positions
correlated to profile data).
A portable military specification Panasonic
Toughbook with touch-screen controls allows for easy, safe
one-person operation. The profiling system software allows
instant viewing of profile results and localized roughness. PDF
images and ERD/PPF or Excel format exports of the profile data
are available by touching with a single button within the
software. Simulation routines are provided for predicting the
corrected profile of an existing surface after corrective
grinding or overlay. Encrypted raw data can be re-analyzed
repeatedly with numerous adjustable data reduction and filtering
parameters.
The SSI T3 Ultra-Light system operates at speeds
over 20 mph (30 kph). The field swappable lithium ion batteries
provide an unlimited range of operation and have a 3-4 hour
recharge time. The T3 vehicle is a stable, safe platform with
Integrated headlights, taillights and strobe lights.
The SSI T3
Ultra-Light system meets or exceeds all applicable DOT agency
test methods and certification procedures. This includes the
industry’s most stringent certification protocols: AASHTO
PP51-02 and Texas Department of Transportation Test Tex 1001-S. |

The data
collected by T3 Ultra-Light Profiling System compares with
high precision against independent survey data. Below is an
example of a point-by-point comparison of the profile data
collected by the T3 systems at a one-inch sampling interval
as compared to an independent reference profile generated
with survey instrumentation on a test surface. The T3
system’s data (the blue trace) overlays on the reference
survey profile with exact precision. On a running
point-by-point comparison, the accumulated difference
between the T3 system’s profile and the survey profile is 22
mils (0.022 inches). This level of accuracy elevates the T3
system to among the most accurate of commercially available
surface profiling systems.

SSI T3 Ultra-Light Profiling System: Proof
of Accuracy vs. Survey Data
The T3 Ultra-Light [Profiling System is also
capable of generating highly repeatable profile data. Below
is an example of a profile trace collected in opposite
directions on the same surface. This figure shows the close
comparison of the separately collected traces viewed in
SSI’s patented Profiler software, which displays both traces
aligned in the same direction (regardless of the direction
the test data was collected).
