CS7900 Real Time GPS Tool

At a Glance

The CS7900 Real Time GPS tool is the first of its kind on-equipment tool for precision GPS based navigation through pavement profile data collected with an inertial profiler, or profilograph or walking profiler. The CS7900 eliminates the labor and lane closures associated with pre-painting areas on the pavement for corrective milling or grinding. The CS7900 imports previously collected surface profiles and displays the real time GPS in relation to the profile stations (chainage). The ruggedized GPS hardware configurations are offered at accuracies of 2 inches (.05 meters) with a reasonably priced annual subscription or 0.7 meter (2.3ft) accuracy without subscription. The CS7900 is supplied with SSI’s Profiler 3 software, which is highly configurable for the details displayed on the supplied Toughbook rugged display viewed by the machine operator. The displayed attributes include actual shape of the road (peaks, troughs), Continuous IRI, localized roughness values, distance between areas to be corrected, head height adjustments, ProVal recommended grind areas, and more.

Case Study

The CS7900 Real Time GPS Tool has been validated on both milling and grinding machines used on pavement rehabilitation projects overseen by the California Department of Transportation (CalTrans). Security Paving, Inc., owner of Diamond Products PC6000 highway grinders, has used the CS7900 on many projects for grinding pavement without markings based on the real time GPS. Pavement Recycling Systems, Inc. (Los Angeles, CA) owns various models of milling machines and has also successfully used the CS7900 system. Since the pilot CalTrans projects, numerous users have adopted the CS7900 for real time profile visualization and navigation on board milling and grinding machines.

Hardware & Software

Hardware

  • Navigate to areas for milling or grinding for corrections without marking pavement
  • Can be mounted on any milling machine or diamond grinder
  • Utilizes a precise GPS receiver with an optional satellite subscription
    • Accurate to within 0.1 meter (3.94 inches)
    • No base station needed
    • NTRIP and satellite based corrections
  • Use collected profiles to determine grind locations
  • Waterproof Pelican enclosure for GPS and electronics
  • Pelican case magnet mounted to grinder frame
  • Computer docking station mounts to equipment’s frame
  • Simple removal of hardware (magnet or pole mounted)
  • Panasonic Toughbook runs the SSI Profiler software
  • The Panasonic Toughbook can be mounted on either side of the grinder
  • All equipment operates from the grinder’s battery
  • Pelican case also charges the Panasonic Toughbook
  • GPS Equipment can be used on other devices

Software

  • Uses the profile data and GPS collected with an inertial profiler or profilograph system
  • Can import ProVal grinding locations (IRI, MRI, etc.)
  • Active display of exact locations to begin and end grinding; also shows height of trace peaks
  • Displays current position by GPS and linear distance to next and previous grind locations
  • Locations of grinding can be merged longitudinally and transversely
  • View single or dual graphs (profile, continuous IRI)
  • Zoom/pan mode for adjustable trace viewing
  • Files with grinding locations are small: ~1MB/mile
  • Data can be transferred to the grinder in under 5 minutes by USB
  • Grinder operator does need to adjust the GPS-tracking system during grinding
  • Current location displays on the elevation trace or continuous IRI plot
