Overview

SSI’s profiling equipment can be tuned to characterize the passable roughness condition of dirt surfaces, including such as pavement subgrades, off-road, or trail surfaces. Topography measurements of dirt surfaces are also supported by SSI’s mobile surveying systems.

 

Profile & RMS Roughness

Gravel and off-road surfaces can be measured with modified configurations of SSI’s CS9100/CS9300 high speed profiling systems or CS8700 lightweight profiler. More robust accelerometers and different, or no lasers are among the modifications. A detailed surface profile is collected, with customized outputs such as RMS (root mean square) roughness assessments. GPS coordinates are included for position and GIS applications.

 

3D Topography

The dirt configurations of SSI’s inertial profilers can be paired with corrected GPS or total stations for a 3D topography of the surface with accurate survey elevations. The data is output in CAD formats (PNEZD, PLLHD, GPGGA) for design and machine control applications.

 

Use Case: Off-Road Tank & Military Vehicle Trail Testing

For several years, SSI has performed harsh terrain measurements for the United States Marine Corps (USMC). SSI inertial profiler instrumentation is installed on military vehicle to measure tank trails and other off-road surfaces. Customized outputs, including RMS roughness data are delivered to meet USMC engineering requirements.
