In the US, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) mandates local government compliance with various access criteria. SSI has automated the traditionally labor intensive manual methods for measuring ADA accessibility.
Automated Measurement of Sidewalk Access Criteria
SSI’s CS8900 Access Profiler has electronics and sensors to measure sidewalk attributes, including evenness, cross-slope and forward slope (running grade). The CS8900 also stores a continuous profile for reporting ride quality. A motorized solution—the SSI 8600 Ultralight Profiler is under development.
GPS, Camera & GIS Integration
The sidewalk data files include GPS position integrated with the surface measurements. Camera images at configurable intervals can also be added. The data can be exported to various formats, including GIS (Geographic Information Systems) for use in third party applications (such as ESRI ArcGIS).
SSI’s Access Profilers are designed to measure ADA Access under Title II of the Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA) (42 U.S.C. §§ 12131-12164), Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 (Section 504) (29 U.S.C. §794) and associated regulations.
